Egg Freezing in Singapore: Everything You Need to Know Before You Decide

egg freezing

If you have been thinking about preserving your fertility but are not sure where to start, you are not alone. More women in Singapore are choosing to freeze their eggs — and for good reason. Whether you are focused on your career, waiting for the right partner, or simply not ready yet, egg freezing offers a way to protect your options for the future.

This guide covers everything you need to know: how the process works, the best age to consider it, what tests are involved, and what to expect at every step.

What Is Egg Freezing?

Egg freezing — medically known as oocyte cryopreservation — is a fertility preservation technique that allows healthy, mature eggs to be collected from your ovaries, frozen, and stored until you are ready to use them.

When the time comes to start a family, the frozen eggs are thawed, fertilised using in vitro fertilisation (IVF), and transferred to your uterus as embryos.

Unlike embryo freezing, egg freezing does not require a partner or sperm donor at the time of the procedure, making it a flexible and empowering option for women at many different life stages.

Why Are More Women in Singapore Choosing to Freeze Their Eggs?

Women are born with all the eggs they will ever have. Over time, both the number and the quality of those eggs naturally decline — and this process accelerates after the age of 35.

Egg freezing allows you to preserve eggs at their healthiest, before age-related changes begin to affect your fertility. It does not guarantee a future pregnancy, but it can significantly improve your chances compared to trying to conceive later using older eggs.

Common reasons women in Singapore choose to freeze their eggs include:

- Prioritising career or further education
- Not yet having found the right partner
- Wanting to preserve fertility before medical treatment (such as chemotherapy)
- Simply wanting more time before starting a family

What Is the Best Age to Freeze Your Eggs?

This is one of the most common questions fertility specialists hear — and the honest answer is: it depends on you.

That said, most fertility specialists agree that the ideal window for egg freezing is between your late 20s and early 30s. During this period:

- Egg quality is generally at its highest
- Ovarian reserve (the number of eggs remaining) is typically stronger
- More healthy eggs can often be collected in a single cycle
- The likelihood of a successful future pregnancy is higher

Does this mean it is too late if you are in your mid-30s?

Not necessarily. Many women in Singapore successfully freeze their eggs in their mid-30s. However, as ovarian reserve naturally decreases with age, it may take additional stimulation cycles to collect enough mature eggs. Currently, women in Singapore can freeze their eggs between the ages of 21 and 37.

The most important thing to understand is that age alone does not tell the whole story. A woman of 30 may have a lower ovarian reserve than a woman of 35. This is why a personalised fertility assessment is always the starting point.

Understanding Your Ovarian Reserve: The Fertility Tests That Matter

Before recommending egg freezing, your fertility specialist will carry out an Egg Quality and Ovarian Reserve Assessment. This gives a much clearer picture of your fertility than age alone.

Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) Test

The AMH blood test is one of the most useful tools for estimating how many eggs remain in your ovaries. A higher AMH level generally suggests a larger ovarian reserve. However, AMH does not directly measure egg quality — it is one piece of a larger picture.

Hormone Blood Tests

Your fertility specialist will also check other hormones that reflect ovarian function and overall reproductive health, including:

- FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone)
- LH (Luteinising Hormone)
- Oestradiol
- Prolactin
- Testosterone

Together, these give a more complete understanding of how your ovaries are functioning.

Pelvic Ultrasound

A transvaginal ultrasound allows your doctor to count the number of developing follicles in your ovaries — known as the antral follicle count. This helps predict how your ovaries are likely to respond to stimulation during treatment.

These three assessments together create a personalised fertility profile, which your specialist will use to determine the best timing and approach for your egg freezing cycle.

What Happens During the Egg Freezing Process?

The egg freezing process typically takes around two to three weeks from start to finish. Here is what to expect at each stage:

1. Ovarian Stimulation
You will self-administer hormone injections daily for approximately 10–14 days. These medications stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs, rather than the single egg released in a natural cycle.

2. Monitoring
Throughout stimulation, you will attend regular appointments for ultrasound scans and blood tests to track follicle growth and hormone levels. This allows your doctor to adjust your medication if needed and determine the right moment for egg retrieval.

3. Trigger Injection
Once your follicles reach the right size, you will be given a trigger injection to finalise egg maturation, timed precisely before retrieval.

4. Egg Retrieval
Egg retrieval is a minor procedure performed under light sedation, so you will be comfortable throughout. Using ultrasound guidance, your doctor gently collects the mature eggs from your follicles. The procedure typically takes around 20–30 minutes.

5. Vitrification (Flash Freezing)
Mature eggs are immediately frozen using a technique called vitrification — a rapid flash-freezing process that minimises the formation of ice crystals and preserves egg integrity for long-term storage.

6. Storage
Your frozen eggs are stored safely until you are ready to use them. When that time comes, they are thawed, fertilised with sperm via IVF, and any resulting healthy embryos are transferred to your uterus.

How Do I Know If Egg Freezing Is Right for Me?

Egg freezing is not a one-size-fits-all decision. The right choice depends on your personal circumstances, your fertility profile, and your future family goals.

A consultation with a fertility specialist can help you understand:

- Your current ovarian reserve and egg quality
- Whether this is a good time to proceed, or whether there is flexibility
- How many eggs do you need to collect for a realistic chance of future success
- The realistic success rates based on your individual profile

It is worth remembering that egg freezing is not a guarantee of pregnancy — but it can meaningfully extend your reproductive window and give you greater control over your future.
